Reception
Autumn 1 2025
We have been thinking all about ourselves and what it means to by 'me'. We have talked about things that we like, things we are good at and what we look like. We have noticed that we are not all the same and that is what makes us who we are. We have been making pictures of ourselves using pencils and using paint and thought about the features that we have on our body - 1 face, 2 eyes, 1 body, 2 arms, 2 legs etc.

Autumn 2 2025
We have been answering the big question: what do people celebrate? We have been looking at different celebrations and noticed that not everyone celebrates the same things or in the same way. We talked about our own experiences of different celebrations, such as birthdays and Christmas, and said how we celebrate them. We have also looked at the celebration of Diwali and noticed the similarities and differences between this and other celebrations. Diwali is a very colourful celebration, creating rangoli patterns and having lots of fireworks. We noticed that fireworks are also used for things like bonfire night and New Year. As it was the lead up to Christmas, we decorated the classroom and learnt about why some people celebrate Christmas. We enjoyed doing a performance to our grown-ups, singing Christmas songs that we had learnt in Music.

We have now learnt numbers to 5 and are becoming more confident making number bonds to 5 using physical resources like counters and numicon. We have been using five frames and part-whole models to help us with this too.

Spring 1 2026
We have had so much fun answering our big question: what is your favourite traditional tale? We have focused on reading and retelling 3 stories in Literacy but have listened to so many more traditional tales through the half term in our story times! We had a very cheeky visitor to our classrooms, someone who ate our porridge and broke our chair - we think it must have been Goldilocks! There was so much discussion around who did this, and why! We wanted to try porridge for ourselves as we wondered why Goldilocks loved it so much, so we made and tasted porridge. We had lots of opportunities to retell some traditional tales, using props, stick puppets and story maps to help us. To end the half term, we had a dress up day where we came to school dressed as our favourite traditional tale characters. It was amazing hearing everyone's reasons for dressing up as the characters they chose.

We have also continued our learning of number and now we are confident making numbers up to 8. We have been using numicon, ten frames and number sentences to represent our numbers. We have also looked at 2D shapes again and have been noticing how many sides and corners the shapes have.

In art, we have been looking at the artwork by Kandinsky. We noticed that he used lines and shapes of different colours, rather than creating pictures of things he could see like many other artists. We were inspired by his artwork and decided to create our own class pieces of Concentric Circles and Composition VIII. We were very proud of our teamwork and our creativity.
