Years 3 and 4

Autumn 1 - History Focus

Year 3 and 4 children have been enjoying finding out about why the Romans were successful in invading Britain. They have found out about life in the Roman army and why the army was efficient. They have made shields and learnt how to march and make tortoise formations to defend themselves from the enemy.

The children have imagined what life was like as a Roman soldier and have written a postcard back to Rome persuading their friend to join the army.
In addition, they have learnt about the warrior Queen Boudicca and how she fought against the Romans. This has produced some excellent descriptive writing!

After having listened to the story called The Roman Beanfeast, the children were inspired to create projects of their own. These were displayed during the Roman day at the end of term. The children enjoyed having a Roman feast too.

Year 4 children have made a wonderful start to learning to play a brass instrument. They will be performing in an end of year concert during the summer term.

In science, the children have enjoyed learning about sound and finding out about how sounds are made, as well as changing the volume and pitch.

Autumn Term 2 - Geography Focus

Year 3 and 4 children have enjoyed doing Geography this half-term and finding out about how to map where they live. They learnt about the differences between Great Britain, The Great British Isles and The United Kingdom. The children worked in small groups putting together jigsaws on these. They have also learnt about counties and cities within Great Britain and The United Kingdom. The children have learnt to map read and understand symbols on Ordnance Survey maps.

The children have produced some excellent descriptive writing based on the book The Water Horse by Dick-King Smith. They wrote about the discovery of the egg as well as producing imaginative descriptions about it. They also enjoyed writing instructions for how to look after their imaginary creature that hatched from their egg!

The whole year band has been working hard on their oracy skills and learning to talk confidently in both small groups and in class situations.

Year 4 children continue to make progress learning to play a brass instrument. They will be performing in an end of year concert during the summer term.

In Design and Technology, the children have worked hard learning about levers and link mechanisms. They explored and investigated making two different types of levers. Then they designed and made their own Christmas card using a link mechanism and both a lever and an output.

Finally, in the last week of term, the whole year band walked to Melton Theatre to watch the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk. Much fun was had by all, and it was a great end-of-term treat.
