Year 3/4 for the Autumn 1

In history, the children have been learning about life in Britain during the Stone Age. They have been learning about how people lived, what their lives were like and what tolls they had. In September the whole year group spent the day at Creswell Crags in Nottinghamshire. The children spent the day experiencing life as a stone age person. They experienced survival skills of learning how to hunt, build shelters and make fires. In groups they also became palaeontologists and had to rebuild the skeletons of stone age animals such as hyenas, cave lions and red foxes. Furthermore, they experienced life in a genuine stone age cave and held replica stone age artefacts. 

In English, relating to our history work, the children have enjoyed listening to the instructions book How to wash a woolly mammoth. This inspired them to write superb instructions of their own about how to wash a variety of stone age animals.

They enjoyed also listening to the story Stone Age Boy which has inspired and helped them to produce their own stone age stories. 

In science, the children have been finding out about different rocks and their properties. They have learnt about sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. Different tests have been carried to test things such as their hardness and waterproofness. They now know the properties of each.

Times tables continue to be a huge focus. Each week, the children have been working hard to increase their scores. Well done to all our baseline champions so far!

Understanding place value can be tricky, but everyone has worked hard to grasp an understanding of the different values of each number. There has been a lot of practical work using maths equipment. They have also explored rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. Some children have been also rounding to the nearest 1000.

Swimming has been happening this half term and everyone has been working hard to learn water confidence and improve their different strokes. The children are enjoying their swimming lessons.
