For those of you who don’t know me, I’m PCSO Will BERRIDGE 6656, one of the local officers that cover the Melton Town North beat. I wanted to send out a quick message just to highlight the potential dangers that you need to be aware of during these cold months forward. I’m sure everyone is aware of the tragic incident in Solihull where numerous children were playing out on the ice and fell through causing the awful deaths of these young children. Everyone here at Leicestershire Police share our condolences with the families connected to this incident and wanted to send out this message to prevent anything like this happening again. Melton Police would like to advise on the following; Ice can seem thicker than it is, we would advise anyone from walking over ice even if you believe it can support your weight. For those of you that have children, please can you sit down and spread the awareness of these dangers with your children. · All waters around the UK are cold enough to induce the effects of ‘cold water shock’ · Over 60% of drownings that occur are when people have ended up in the water by accident. · A sudden rise in blood pressure can be fatal for people with a pre-existing heart condition. · Studies suggest that people’s ability to swim in the cold water is much less then if people were to swim in a swimming pool. · Survivors of drowning have highlighted that the effects from cold water shock made it difficult to survive. What should you do if you fall into the water? First keep your mouth out of the water until you have your breathing under control, this can be done by rolling onto your back and floating to stay on the surface. Then don’t waste any time upon entry into the water, swim towards any viable exit before your muscles begin to relax. Finally re-warm yourself as soon as possible to avoid the effects of hypothermia. Thank you for taking the time to read this short message.
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Stay safe all!
